POLITICAL PARODYREAL EVENT. FICTIONAL ESCALATION.

WASHINGTON — This is fictional parody inspired by real events.

The White House on Monday unveiled FreedomFuel Preferences, a new federal initiative allowing diesel customers to select the personal explanation most compatible with their emotional needs before purchasing fuel imported under President Trump’s proposed arrangement with Russia.

“Americans should never have to choose between affordability and having a coherent foreign policy,” said a fictional senior administration official, standing before a screen displaying three large buttons: LOWER MY BILL, DON’T TELL ME THE ORIGIN STORY, and I HAVE QUESTIONS BUT A JOB SITE STARTS AT SIX.

The initiative follows criticism from a bipartisan group of senators who said the plan to permit Russian diesel imports runs contrary to existing restrictions intended to keep American energy dollars from supporting Russia’s war against Ukraine. The White House response, according to a fictional internal presentation, was to identify the real obstacle: “customers experiencing unhelpful feelings at the point of purchase.”

Under the new system, diesel itself remains exactly the same. What changes is the accompanying narrative.

Drivers who choose the Budget First setting receive a receipt saying their purchase supported “globally optimized price relief.” Those selecting Alliance Mode are thanked for participating in “an advanced conversation among sovereign partners.” And users who activate Ethics Plus receive a 14-minute animated explainer in which a smiling oil barrel repeatedly assures them that international law is “not a one-size-fits-all garment.”

“This is about choice,” the fictional official said. “For too long, Washington has forced Americans to accept one static explanation for why something is happening. Now, if Russian diesel enters the supply chain, every family can decide whether it arrived as an affordability measure, a negotiating tactic, or a thing their spouse handled while they were inside paying for coffee.”

The rollout was immediately complicated by the fact that no setting actually changes where the fuel comes from, where the money goes, or the criticism from lawmakers in both parties. That discovery prompted the administration to add a fourth option, Personalized Reality, which replaces all policy information with a brief video of a pump nozzle saying, “You’re doing great under complicated circumstances.”

Senate offices were reportedly alarmed by the program’s treatment of their objections. In the FreedomFuel app, users who search “Congress says this may be illegal” are directed to a feature called Contextual Calm, where an AI voice reads the phrase “energy security” at progressively slower speeds until the user either accepts the answer or closes the app to answer a work email.

The White House initially planned to offer a “sanctions-conscious” option, in which customers could pay two cents more per gallon to have a junior staffer privately acknowledge that the situation feels awkward. But political advisers objected that the surcharge might suggest moral consistency is a luxury good, a concern quickly resolved by renaming it the Premium Values Experience.

At a closed-door demonstration, fictional consultants reportedly tested several possible labels for the Russian diesel. “Freedom Distillate” performed poorly with voters who knew what distillate meant. “Peace-at-the-Pump Blend” was withdrawn after someone in the room asked whether peace was part of the blend. “Patriot Fuel, Internationally Sourced” briefly tested well until focus-group participants assumed it was a chicken sandwich.

The strongest early results came from a phrase developed by a consultant who previously branded a streaming service’s price increase as “more ways to belong”: Energy With Nuance.

“People don’t necessarily object to a policy,” the consultant explained in a fictional memo. “They object to being asked to notice its full shape all at once.”

The program’s real second act arrived when Russian officials, fictionalized here for satire, requested access to the preference data. Their argument was simple: if American consumers could choose the story they wanted about the fuel, Russia should be allowed to see which story converted best. The request sent the White House into an emergency meeting over whether the administration had accidentally transformed sanctions policy into market research for the Kremlin.

By evening, FreedomFuel had been updated again. The choice screen now begins with a large patriotic banner and a new disclaimer: “Your values are important to us, particularly when they can be sorted into useful demographic segments.”

Officials stressed that no one is being forced to download the app. Anyone who prefers can still buy diesel the old-fashioned way: by staring at the price, feeling briefly implicated in global events, and receiving a receipt that says, “Thank you for selecting the version of foreign policy that fits your monthly budget.”
