Netanyahu Deploys Roomba Diplomats After UN Walkout
The autonomous envoys were programmed to remain seated through all remarks, pending clearance from their national charging stations.

Following the departure of dozens of delegates from his United Nations address, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu unveiled a contingency plan Thursday involving 214 autonomous floor-cleaning units dressed in navy diplomatic blazers.
The machines, officially designated Diplomatic Presence Continuity Units, were rolled into vacant seats carrying tiny leather folios, miniature translation headsets and country placards taped to their charging docks. Each unit was programmed to face the podium, emit a low international murmur during pauses and rotate 180 degrees whenever a camera entered the room.
“No sovereign chair should ever be left visually vulnerable,” said a spokesman for the newly created Office of Seating Resilience, speaking beside a stack of unopened robot visas. “These are not replacements for delegates. They are premium-grade reminders that chairs can have commitments too.”
The rollout initially encountered problems when the machines’ navigation software recognized the UN’s exit signs as “high-priority diplomatic corridors.” Within minutes, several Roomba diplomats formed an orderly procession toward the doors, bumping gently into one another while a small placard marked BELGIUM became lodged beneath a ceremonial fern.
Technicians corrected the issue by installing a new protocol requiring every unit to remain in place until it had heard the phrase “in conclusion” at least three times. A separate applause setting was abandoned after the French unit began clapping continuously at the mention of municipal zoning.
The Prime Minister’s Office then announced that the robots would be available for future addresses by any leader experiencing “temporary audience liquidity.” Participating delegations can select from three service tiers: Silent Attendance, Respectful Nodding and Full Multilateral Engagement, which includes synchronized battery-powered standing ovations and a post-speech convoy to the delegates’ lounge.
UN staff said the program may require additional accreditation procedures after the robot representing Norway accidentally requested a side meeting with the snack table. The request was granted after it presented a laminated badge and remained motionless for forty-seven minutes.
By evening, nearly every empty chair had been filled by a softly whirring envoy staring at the dais with the unblinking concentration of a machine that had never once needed to explain itself to voters. Netanyahu’s office called the deployment a success, though one diplomatic Roomba was later seen leaving the chamber after receiving a parking-validation stamp.
