Kevin McCarthy Orders GOP Midterm Hopefuls to Campaign Without Chairs
Candidates will remain upright until Election Day, except during donor lunches classified as “vertical engagement.”

Kevin McCarthy has ordered Republican midterm candidates to remove all chairs from their campaign headquarters after warning GOP hopefuls not to “sit back,” according to a 43-page posture directive circulated Friday under the title Operation: Forward Lean.
The directive requires candidates, consultants, county chairs, legal teams and anybody holding a clipboard to remain standing within 500 feet of campaign literature. Folding chairs have been placed in off-site storage facilities, while office sofas are now covered in blue tarp and labeled “Complacency Equipment.”
“You cannot take back the House while physically accepting lumbar support,” said a campaign official wearing a laminated badge that read TEMPORARILY VERTICAL. “The opposition has couches. We have urgency.”
The first complication emerged when several candidates attempted to film kitchen-table ads and discovered their kitchens no longer contained chairs, stools, benches or anything capable of implying a manageable afternoon. One campaign replaced its dining set with six podiums. Another installed a standing desk in the candidate’s minivan, prompting the state party to issue an immediate reminder that “standing for the people” is not a defense against seat-belt laws.
McCarthy’s office then clarified that candidates may sit only during what it calls “strategic descent events,” including emergency flights, jury duty and donor meetings exceeding the federal threshold for hearing the phrase “grassroots momentum” without refreshments. Campaign staff must document each descent on Form 22-S, which asks whether the seated individual appeared to enjoy it.
The furniture industry quickly attempted to exploit the policy by marketing a line of “patriotic leaning stations,” essentially bar stools with the middle removed. McCarthy rejected the proposal after an internal review found that several models still permitted “a troubling amount of relaxation.”
By late afternoon, GOP field offices were reporting a new morale issue: volunteers had begun calling themselves “the standing army,” and one candidate’s communications director had accidentally scheduled a press conference inside a Staples display aisle because it offered the party’s most ideologically acceptable work surface.
McCarthy is expected to unveil the initiative’s final phase next week: a ceremonial destruction of the campaign’s last remaining recliner, followed by a brief standing ovation nobody will be allowed to leave early.
