POLITICAL PARODYREAL EVENT. FICTIONAL ESCALATION.

WASHINGTON— In an entirely fictional next step following Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s creation of a Pentagon Office of Religious Affairs reporting directly to him, the department has unveiled a revised chain-of-command chart placing God beneath a box labeled “Senior Strategic Adviser, Transcendent Portfolio.”

The chart, displayed briefly in a windowless conference room before several colonels noticed the thundercloud graphic seemed to be staring at them, is intended to clarify the department’s spiritual reporting structure. Under the new system, the Almighty will provide weekly deliverables to the secretary, including battlefield morale, national purpose and an updated estimate of whether America is still “putting on the full armor” at an acceptable clip.

“This is about readiness,” said a fictional Pentagon spokesperson, standing beside a podium equipped with a laser pointer and a brass placard reading MISSION: ETERNAL, SUBJECT TO REVISION. “For too long, spiritual warfare has lacked clear ownership. Nobody knew who was driving the synergy between divine providence and the secretary’s calendar.”

The first all-hands meeting reportedly got off to a difficult start when the Office of Religious Affairs asked whether an eternal being could commit to a recurring Thursday check-in. A deputy director suggested putting “All of Time” into Outlook. The invitation immediately bounced back with the note: This attendee’s availability cannot be determined.

Hegseth’s fictional office has nevertheless pressed ahead with a new performance framework. Faith, hope and charity will each receive key performance indicators. Miracles will be tracked quarterly, though the department has reserved the right to exclude any miracles occurring outside budget season, because those “create an unrealistic baseline.”

Chaplains, who under the real policy changes are being elevated as part of the department’s religious-affairs push, were initially optimistic about the new chain of command. That optimism faded when they learned every prayer request would now require an executive summary, a risk assessment and a color-coded determination of whether the request could be resolved at the battalion level.

“The old system allowed a person to seek comfort, guidance or meaning in a manner consistent with their own faith,” said one fictional chaplain, carefully sliding a 46-page spiritual escalation packet across a conference table. “The new system asks whether comfort has a projected completion date.”

The trouble deepened after the Pentagon’s management consultants discovered that not every religious tradition defines the divine in a way that fits neatly into a federal org chart. Rather than acknowledge this, the department classified theological difference as an “interagency communications gap.”

A working group was immediately formed to decide whether enlightenment should be listed as an outcome, an asset or a cross-functional deliverable. Its first meeting lasted six hours and produced a draft recommendation that enlightenment be “piloted in one theater before department-wide implementation.”

The report also warned that omniscience poses a security concern. If a senior adviser already knows the outcome of every meeting, officials reasoned, it becomes impossible to tell whether that adviser has completed the mandatory pre-read.

By Wednesday, the Office of Religious Affairs had created a secure portal where military personnel could submit spiritual concerns in accordance with classification rules. The portal’s dropdown menu offered three options: “Urgent,” “Routine” and “Mysteries Beyond Human Comprehension.” The third option routed users to a help desk in Arlington, where a contractor had been instructed to answer every call by saying, “Have you tried turning your soul off and back on?”

But the Pentagon’s biggest conflict arrived when the secretary’s office requested a concise mission statement from the universe. The first draft—“Be”—was returned with tracked changes requesting more action verbs and a clearer timeline.

After several tense rounds of edits, the department reached a compromise. God will remain a direct report to Hegseth, provided Hegseth remains a direct report to the laws of physics, a relationship officials described as “aspirational but under review.”

At press time, the Almighty had been placed on a 90-day performance improvement plan for failing to make the sun’s quarterly objectives sufficiently measurable.
