POLITICAL PARODYREAL EVENT. FICTIONAL ESCALATION.

The FBI has placed its online careers portal into the Witness Protection Program after a breach left the Bureau unable to say how intruders got in, according to a new recruiting memo printed on paper so thick it could not be emailed by accident.

Effective immediately, applicants seeking careers in intelligence, cybersecurity, accounting, surveillance, or federal parking enforcement must locate the portal themselves using a series of clues distributed across three unmarked government office parks and one Panera Bread outside Quantico.

“The most secure website is a website whose location cannot be established by hostile actors, friendly actors, or the division that owns it,” said a fictional Bureau hiring official, standing beside a locked rolling whiteboard marked only with a coffee-ring-shaped seal.

The new process begins with a QR code printed on the back of a laminated visitor badge. Scanning it produces a 1-800 number, where a recorded voice asks callers to name the last federal building they entered voluntarily. Successful candidates receive a parking-validation sticker and instructions to wait beneath a decorative ficus until approached by someone carrying a manila envelope with no visible purpose.

The system encountered its first complication Tuesday when a cybersecurity applicant found the hidden portal in nine minutes, accessed it from a public library, and was immediately flagged for demonstrating “uncomfortably strong initiative.” His application was transferred to a special review unit, which has not been able to locate the review unit’s shared drive since January.

Officials said the redesigned portal also protects employee information by requiring every applicant to invent a personal security question on the spot. Suggested prompts include, “Which conference room has the least reliable ceiling tile?” and “What was the name of your first government-issued password before it expired during orientation?”

To prevent another breach, the Bureau has hired a separate contractor to monitor the physical whereabouts of the website. The contractor’s first monthly report found that the website may currently be inside a locked filing cabinet, although this assessment was downgraded after investigators learned the cabinet contains only the old application instructions and a bowl of complimentary peppermints.

Applicants who cannot find the new portal are encouraged to submit their résumés by leaving them face-down on a bench near Union Station, where a federal employee will collect them if they appear sufficiently mysterious.
