WASHINGTON—The Federal Reserve announced Wednesday that it would keep interest rates steady and place inflation on a 90-day Performance Improvement Plan, giving the cost of living one final opportunity to demonstrate that it takes American households’ feedback seriously.

At a solemnly fluorescent press conference, Chair Jerome Powell said inflation had been informed that its recent behavior—remaining visible in grocery aisles, rent renewals and the facial expressions of people checking out at Target—was “not aligned with the organization’s stated values.”

“Nobody wants to lose inflation,” Powell said, speaking with the gentle disappointment of a manager who has already been told by Legal not to say what everyone is thinking. “Inflation has made valuable contributions to economic uncertainty. But it needs to show more initiative in becoming less of itself.”

The plan requires inflation to meet several measurable benchmarks, including reducing its footprint in voter interviews, refraining from appearing uninvited in campaign ads and demonstrating that it can hear the phrase ‘working families’ without immediately charging them another $19 for sandwich ingredients.

Fed staff said the decision to hold rates steady reflected a commitment to “constructive accountability.” Raising rates too quickly, one official explained, could make inflation feel attacked. Leaving them unchanged indefinitely could make voters feel attacked. The central bank therefore selected the mature middle ground: documenting the problem in a shared folder and scheduling a follow-up after everyone has had time to calm down.

Inflation, reached through a spokesperson wearing an expensive blazer and a lanyard from a conference called Disruption Is Dinner, said it welcomed the clarity.

“I reject the characterization that I have failed to improve,” the spokesperson said. “I have been navigating a complex macroeconomic environment while maintaining strong visibility across essential consumer touchpoints. If some stakeholders feel they are spending more for less, that is a perception challenge we look forward to unpacking in a listening session.”

The comment triggered an immediate selloff in patience.

A difficult conversation with the economy

Under the plan, inflation must submit weekly reflections describing a moment when it made prices feel unnecessarily personal. It will also be paired with a senior monetary-policy mentor who will ask it to distinguish between “pricing power” and “making a carton of eggs feel like a luxury purchase with a rewards program.”

The arrangement briefly appeared to be working Tuesday morning, when inflation accepted responsibility for a $7 cold brew. But momentum collapsed after it described the price as “an opportunity for consumers to invest in a premium caffeine experience.”

Powell then revealed that the Fed’s concern was not merely that inflation had failed to improve, but that it had begun managing upward.

According to an internal review, inflation has spent months convincing politicians, corporations and television panels that the real issue is whether Americans are emotionally prepared to notice prices. It allegedly presented a 46-slide deck titled Reframing Affordability: Why Your Paycheck Is Actually a Mindset.

“That was a troubling development,” Powell said. “Once a problem starts leading the meeting, it is no longer a problem. It is vice president of strategy.”

The revelation created complications inside the Fed, where some officials argued that inflation should receive a tougher warning. Others said a rate hike might be interpreted as “punitive feedback,” potentially causing inflation to become defensive and seek validation from luxury snack brands.

Governor Lisa Cook, who dissented from the decision, reportedly submitted a three-word alternative plan: “Enough development opportunities.”

Her memo was returned by Human Resources with a reminder that all corrective action must include “a path toward mutual success,” a phrase economists had previously believed could only cause harm in a team-building retreat.

By Wednesday afternoon, inflation had already booked its first coaching session, where it was asked what conditions it needs in order to stop charging $14 for something described as a bowl.

It responded that it works best in a culture of trust, autonomy and zero questions about why a bag of chips now contains seven chips arranged around an atmosphere.

The Fed said it would reassess inflation’s progress in 90 days, or sooner if it receives another calendar invite titled “Quick Sync: Household Expectations.”

Until then, Americans are encouraged to continue demonstrating resilience, which the central bank defines as discovering that the self-checkout machine has begun asking whether they would like to round up for the economy.
