Habba’s $50 Million Deal Prompts White House to Hire a Coincidence Coach
The administration’s new consultant says the first rule of an unrelated event is not scheduling it directly beside another unrelated event.

PARODY. In a fictional effort to restore public confidence in the ancient American principle that nothing is connected to anything, the White House has hired a luxury coincidence coach following reports about Alina Habba’s extraordinarily lucrative private employment deal and the later pardon of Venezuelan billionaire Julio Herrera Velutini.
The coach, Geneva Pembrooke, arrived Wednesday in a cream-colored SUV with no visible license plate and immediately asked whether anyone in the administration had considered leaving a little breathing room between major events.
“Not morally,” Pembrooke clarified, opening a leather portfolio. “Temporally. Morality is a personal journey. Timing is a service industry.”
Under the new program, senior officials will receive individualized calendars designed to prevent potentially unrelated developments from appearing within the same season, fiscal quarter, or tasteful afternoon. A family may still offer a politically connected lawyer a job worth tens of millions of dollars, and a president may still grant a pardon, but Pembrooke insists the two must no longer “arrive at the same gala wearing matching causal narratives.”
The first White House workshop, titled Separating Your Life-Changing Events With Grace, reportedly became tense when participants learned that “weeks later” is no longer considered enough distance for a premium coincidence.
“Weeks later is for exes getting engaged,” Pembrooke told the room. “For a fully unconditional pardon, we recommend at least one weather system, a cabinet reshuffle, and a national conversation about something completely different.”
Habba, who has denied any role in securing Herrera’s pardon, was said to be especially interested in the portion of the seminar dealing with outside employment. Pembrooke advised attendees that private work should be presented with the same delicate restraint as an expensive destination wedding: no abrupt announcements, no visible urgency, and absolutely no guest arriving with a clemency application tucked into a tuxedo jacket.
“The public can accept an enormous amount,” Pembrooke said. “What they dislike is being asked to admire the centerpiece while the caterer is stamping it ‘FULL AND UNCONDITIONAL.’”
The Difficult Art of Looking Unrelated
The project encountered its first complication when the coach asked officials to identify relationships that were genuinely unrelated. According to one fictional attendee, the room fell silent for nearly eleven minutes, except for someone trying to remember whether a donor was technically a donor if the money had passed through a super PAC, a family office, three advisers, and a golf tournament.
Pembrooke then introduced a color-coded chart distinguishing ordinary coincidence from what she called “executive coincidence.” Ordinary coincidence, she explained, is running into a former colleague at an airport. Executive coincidence is when every person involved insists a sequence of events is random but has retained separate lawyers to explain how random it was.
At that point, the White House made an important discovery: it did not merely need a coincidence coach. It needed a coincidence concierge.
The concierge service will now offer officials and wealthy supplicants a menu of tasteful buffers between awkwardly neighboring events. Options include a Scandinavian ski trip, a tasteful nonprofit gala, six weeks of vague concern about egg prices, and a limited-edition administration crisis that absorbs all available cable-news oxygen.
For an additional fee—paid, Pembrooke stressed, by “no one relevant”—clients may select the Platinum Dissociation Package. This includes a bipartisan panel of former officials, a formal statement containing the phrase “categorically false,” and a decorative period in which everyone involved pretends they have never heard of calendars.
The reveal, however, came during a practice exercise in which the coach asked participants to stage a completely innocent interaction between a powerful official and a wealthy person seeking mercy. The group could not do it. One aide suggested a chance meeting at a charity dinner. Another objected that charity dinners now looked “too intentional.” A third proposed a yacht, before Pembrooke gently explained that yachts have become “the lanternfish of public suspicion”: they glow in the dark and nobody believes they got there naturally.
By late afternoon, the administration had settled on a new standard. Any future pardon-related coincidence must be so disconnected that even the people experiencing it are briefly confused why they are in the same country.
The White House plans to test the system this winter with a pilot program called Nothing to See Here, Elegantly. If successful, it will be expanded to cover ambassadorships, federal contracts, ballrooms, private dinners, and every other occasion where the government would prefer a timeline to have the emotional depth of a fog machine.
Pembrooke left the briefing with one final warning: “You cannot simply call something unrelated. You have to give it enough room to become a coincidence with its own childhood.”
Minutes later, aides quietly moved the next ethics meeting to a date nobody could remember.
