CNN and CBS Ordered to Share One Giant Breaking-News Desk
The merged newsroom says the new arrangement will eliminate duplication, except for the 47 people assigned to explain whose turn it is to panic.

With Paramount’s takeover of Warner Bros. Discovery moving ahead, executives have unveiled the first operational integration between CNN and CBS News: one enormous walnut breaking-news desk, stretching from the former CNN newsroom to a freight elevator reserved for affiliate meteorologists.
The desk, formally designated the Cross-Platform Urgent Information Surface, seats 86 anchors, 14 standards editors, three retired correspondents who wandered in looking for a green room, and a rotating representative from legal whose only job is to whisper, “Can we call it developing?”
Under the new system, CBS may use the left half of the desk for confirmed events, while CNN receives the right half for live coverage of whether the confirmed event could become a larger event. The center section, marked with yellow tape and a bowl of decorative emergency almonds, is reserved for stories that both networks have decided are too important to let the other network phrase first.
“This is not a merger of editorial voices,” said a Paramount integration official wearing a laminated badge that read NEWSROOM SYNERGY, TEMPORARY. “It is simply a shared surface where two proud institutions can independently reach identical conclusions after competing for the same swivel chair.”
The first complication emerged Monday when both networks attempted to deploy the desk’s red BREAKING NEWS button. CBS pressed it for a verified development. CNN pressed it six seconds later to announce that the development had now become a situation. The simultaneous activation lowered a motorized glass partition between the networks and triggered a prerecorded corporate announcement asking viewers to remain calm while the combined newsroom located a mutually acceptable lower-third.
By afternoon, management had created a new on-air designation: BREAKING, SUBJECT TO INTERNAL SEATING PLAN. Correspondents will use the label whenever a story is unfolding faster than the scheduling software can determine whether its guest segment belongs to CBS Mornings, CNN News Central, 60 Minutes, The Situation Room, or the small section of the desk currently leased to a true-crime podcast.
Executives initially hoped the desk would also streamline prime-time programming. That plan changed after the studio audience discovered that the furniture itself was being treated as a network talent and began applauding whenever it was rolled into frame. Paramount has since assigned the desk its own communications team, glam squad, and a development deal for a weekly special in which rival anchors attempt to claim the good microphone.
The first combined broadcast is expected to begin as soon as engineers determine whether the desk can be safely labeled “live from New York” when most of it is technically in New Jersey.
