Trump and Mamdani Given Joint Custody of New York Until Lunch

President Trump and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani will reportedly receive joint custody of New York for 90 minutes Monday, after staff preparing for their meeting accidentally selected the federal form labeled “shared metropolitan parenting arrangement.”
Under the agreement, Trump will control all Manhattan decisions made before 11:45 a.m., while Mamdani will assume responsibility for the borough at 11:46, following a brief curbside exchange of the ceremonial city key, two MetroCards, and a sealed envelope containing the official explanation for why every scaffolding project lasts fourteen years.
The White House had initially requested a standard sit-down meeting. City Hall requested a standard sit-down meeting. Neither side expected the Department of Intergovernmental Coordination to reserve the Roosevelt Room and then send both men a laminated visitation schedule with “New York City” listed as the dependent.
“The handoff must be calm and reassuring,” said a federal coordinator, standing beside a folding table covered with borough folders. “Children can sense conflict, and New York has approximately 8.3 million of them, plus whatever is happening in Times Square.”
The arrangement immediately encountered complications when both offices claimed responsibility for the city’s emergency snack drawer. Trump aides said the president should be allowed to inspect it as head of the executive branch. Mamdani’s team argued that, as mayor, he was entitled to determine whether the drawer qualified as a public resource or a private-sector giveaway. The dispute was resolved when someone discovered it contained only six stale mints and a tiny packet of Advil.
Staff then moved to the more sensitive matter of transition rituals. A federal aide proposed that Trump walk Mamdani to the appointed exchange point outside City Hall. Municipal officials countered that the city could not be transferred on a sidewalk because the sidewalk was currently under construction, protected by orange cones, and technically scheduled to reopen in 2034.
Instead, the two leaders will meet at a neutral location: a conference room at an unnamed Midtown hotel, where a mediator will ask each man to describe New York’s feelings using an approved list of adjectives. The list contains “dynamic,” “historic,” “world-class,” and “please do not touch the zoning map.”
The custody period is expected to end before lunch, when the city will be returned to its usual arrangement of being governed by several thousand officials, landlords, agencies, authorities, consultants, and one parking sign that appears to possess final veto power.
