POLITICAL PARODYREAL EVENT. FICTIONAL ESCALATION.

State legislatures across the country have begun installing moving walkways at congressional district boundaries, allowing residents to be transported gently from one representative’s problem to another without the administrative burden of standing still.

The infrastructure program, known as the Constituent Mobility and Alignment Corridor, follows reports that redistricting has shifted congressional districts for millions of Americans. Under the new system, a resident approaching a boundary will step onto a waist-high conveyor belt, pass beneath a decorative archway shaped like a salamander, and emerge in a new district holding a laminated badge that reads, “YOUR CONCERNS HAVE BEEN FORWARDED.”

“Maps are dynamic documents,” said a project spokesperson, standing beside a six-lane people mover that curved through a dry cleaner, a cul-de-sac and the snack aisle of a warehouse club. “It was time our residents experienced that dynamism at a comfortable walking speed.”

Legislative leaders said the walkways would reduce confusion caused by voters discovering that their longtime representative no longer technically represents the house, apartment building or unusually decisive backyard barbecue in which they reside. Each station will include a customer-service desk staffed by a bipartisan contractor trained to explain that the change is not personal, except in the mathematical sense.

The project encountered an early complication when consultants discovered that a single suburban commute could carry a resident through nine districts before lunch. Rather than revise the routes, lawmakers approved a premium “Frequent Constituent” program. Riders who cross five district boundaries in one week receive priority seating at town halls, a complimentary tote bag, and the right to hear three different elected officials explain that Washington is broken.

To prevent riders from becoming disoriented, every walkway will play a recorded announcement: “Please keep hands, feet, and local concerns inside the district at all times.” In heavily redrawn areas, the announcement repeats continuously, with a brief pause for campaign advertisements.

By afternoon, the system’s designers had identified a final challenge: constituents were using the walkways to trace the actual shape of their districts in public. Legislatures responded by placing the most revealing segments underground, where riders will travel through a darkened tunnel called the Civic Engagement Experience before resurfacing directly outside the office designated to ignore them.
