Police say the adult entered the field during an Aug. 22 youth football game, tripped a Case Eagles player and later admitted he was wrong. The child was not injured.

A 41-year-old Milwaukee man was cited for disorderly conduct after police say he stepped onto the field and tripped a 9-year-old player during a youth football game in Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin.

The incident occurred around 10:54 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 22, at Case High School during a game between the Case Eagles and Milwaukee Colts, according to the Mount Pleasant Police Department. Police said the man, identified by the Case Eagles coach as a parent from the opposing team, became upset about a play, extended his leg into the path of a player running downfield and caused the child to fall.

Officers stopped the man’s vehicle shortly after he left the game, police said. He was cooperative, admitted the act and acknowledged it was wrong before receiving the citation and being released. Police later determined the child was not injured. The department said it consulted the Racine County District Attorney’s Office and did not pursue a physical-abuse-of-a-child allegation because the statutory element of bodily harm was not present.

Local television reporting included video of the incident and accounts from Case Eagles coach Channing Schultz, who called for accountability and said he was focused on players’ safety. A contact for the Milwaukee Colts told CBS 58 that the adult was not a coach and had been removed for the rest of the season.
